The short version
· IntelliDrive is Travelers' smartphone telematics program. The original version runs a fixed 90-day evaluation; the newer IntelliDrive 365 monitors continuously and re-scores you at every renewal instead.· Signing up alone is worth up to 10% off your first term. Driving safely through the evaluation adds up to 30% at renewal nationally (up to 40% in Nevada), or up to 35% under IntelliDrive 365.· It's a two-way bet almost everywhere: risky driving can raise your premium too. D.C., Montana, North Carolina and Virginia are the only places Travelers says that won't happen.· The standalone IntelliDrive app rates 4.6 on the App Store (5,840 ratings) and 4.3 on Google Play (4,241 ratings) — ahead of most usage-based-insurance apps, though Android reviewers report more bugs than iPhone users do.

Travelers is the value pick in VIP Car Insurance's carrier reviews: $1,634 a year for full coverage on our benchmark profile, 31% under the national average, backed by AM Best's top A++ financial-strength rating. IntelliDrive is one of the bigger levers on top of that base rate — it can shave another 30% or more off a renewal, or add to it, depending on how you actually drive.

How IntelliDrive works

IntelliDrive is app-only — there's no plug-in device or mailed hardware. After you install the Travelers IntelliDrive app (Travelers texts a download link, or you can search for it directly), it detects when you start driving and scores five things automatically: time of day, speed, acceleration, braking and phone distraction. Distraction is scored narrowly — handheld calls, texting and tapping on the phone count against you, but hands-free calls through the car's Bluetooth, and navigation or music running in the background, do not.

Every driver listed on the policy has to install the app and drive for their behavior to count. If someone doesn't, Travelers sends reminder texts and can eventually remove that driver from the program, which affects the household's enrollment discount. On the phone side: iPhones need to be a 4S or newer running iOS 14+; Android phones need cellular, Wi-Fi and GPS chips and Android 10 or newer. The phone has to stay powered on with location services enabled while you drive for trips to score accurately.

A third name you might see: IntelliDrivePlus

Travelers also ran IntelliDrivePlus, a mileage-and-behavior program. It has stopped accepting new enrollments and now continues only for existing customers in Arkansas, Nebraska and Ohio — if a quote or an old policy document mentions it, it isn't something you can sign up for today.

The states where risky driving can't cost you

IntelliDrive is a two-way program in most of the country: drive well and your rate can drop at renewal, drive riskily and it can rise. Travelers names four exceptions where that second half doesn't apply — D.C., Montana, North Carolina and Virginia — meaning the program can only help you there, never hurt you. Everywhere else, treat the discount as a genuine bet on your own driving, not a one-way coupon.

What reviewers actually say

Pulled directly from Apple's and Google's own listings in August 2026, not a third-party estimate: the standalone Travelers IntelliDrive app rates 4.6 out of 5 from 5,840 App Store reviews and 4.3 out of 5 from 4,241 Google Play reviews. IntelliDrive 365's app is newer and far less reviewed — 4.4 from 194 App Store ratings, 3.7 from 112 on Google Play — too small a sample to weigh as heavily as the original app's.

The recurring complaints, across both app stores and driver forums, are consistent: the app noticeably drains battery on long trips, occasionally misses or duplicates trip detection, and — the one that comes up most — can't tell a defensive hard stop from a reckless one. Braking hard for a jaywalking pedestrian or a merging car scores the same as braking hard because you were following too close. That's a real limitation of phone-sensor telematics generally, not something specific to Travelers, but it's worth knowing before you enroll.

Two things stand out. IntelliDrive's 30% renewal cap is toward the high end of the category — only Nationwide's SmartRide (40%) publishes more, and Progressive's Snapshot has no published cap but averages far less in practice. And IntelliDrive is unusually candid about the downside: naming the exact states where risky driving can't raise your rate is more disclosure than most competitors offer, several of which don't say either way.

Is IntelliDrive worth enrolling in?

01Good fit: you're a consistently careful driver, especially around hard braking and late-night trips — the 30% renewal cap (40% in Nevada) is among the higher discounts in this category.
02Good fit: you're in D.C., Montana, North Carolina or Virginia, where IntelliDrive is one-way and can only help your rate.
03Think twice: you brake hard defensively in city traffic or drive frequently between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for work — both count against your score regardless of the reason.
04Think twice: everyone on the policy has to install the app and drive; one household member opting out affects the whole policy's enrollment discount.
05Either way: the 45-day opt-out (90 in Kansas, any time in Montana) lets you try it and back out before any risky-driving penalty applies — you only give up the enrollment discount, not anything already earned.
