How Allstate scores

Each category is scored against a published figure, then weighted into the overall score. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than estimate one.

Strengths and trade-offs

What Allstate does well

  • Accident Forgiveness is a published, purchasable feature rather than a buried one
  • Drivewise is a mature app-based telematics program with rewards every six months
  • Full national agent network for drivers who want in-person service
  • Extended Vehicle Care and car-buying services go beyond a standard policy

Where it falls short

  • The most expensive of the four largest insurers by a wide margin — 35% above the national average
  • Only five discounts are published on the current discounts page
  • Drivewise savings are unavailable in California and Alaska
  • Google Play rating of 4.1 is well behind its iOS rating and behind most competitors

The full review

Allstate is the fourth-largest auto insurer in the country, with 10.19% of the market on 2024 premiums, and one of the two big national carriers built on a captive agent network. It has spent years marketing on protection features — Accident Forgiveness, Drivewise, safe-driving rewards — rather than on price, which turns out to be a fair description of where it lands.

What it costs

$3,176 a year for full coverage on our benchmark profile. The national average is $2,356. That is 35% above average, more than $1,100 a year clear of Geico, and the third-highest figure in this entire review — only Mercury and Farmers are dearer. No amount of framing makes that a small gap, and it is the first thing anyone comparing Allstate should sit with.

A note on Allstate's discount list

Allstate's live discounts page currently publishes only five named discounts: anti-lock brakes, anti-theft, responsible payer, good student, and bundling.

Several features Allstate was historically associated with — Deductible Rewards, Safe Driving Bonus, New Car Replacement, Milewise — no longer appear on live pages, and the URLs for some now return errors. We have not listed them as current offerings, because we could not confirm that they are.

How claims go

693 out of 1,000 in J.D. Power's 2025 claims study, seven points below the segment average and below Geico, State Farm and the majority of this review. Its complaint record is close to what its size predicts. Neither figure is alarming; neither justifies a 35% price premium.

Where Allstate is actually good

Accident Forgiveness is the strongest part of the offering and Allstate treats it as a headline feature rather than fine print — you can add it when you buy, and an at-fault accident then does not raise your rate. Drivewise is a well-built app program with performance rewards paid every six months, though savings are excluded in California and Alaska. The agent network is real and national.

Who it suits

Allstate suits someone who genuinely wants a captive agent, will bundle home and auto substantially, and places real value on Accident Forgiveness — and who has quoted the alternatives and accepted the difference with open eyes. It does not suit a price shopper, and the honest advice for anyone in that category is to quote it alongside State Farm and see whether the bundle actually closes the gap.

Our verdict

Allstate's problem in this review is arithmetic. At $3,176 a year it costs over $1,100 more than Geico for a claims score that is four points lower and a discount list a third the length. The agent network and Accident Forgiveness are genuine, and bundling can close some of that gap — but you have to bundle a lot to close $1,100, and the case for Allstate depends entirely on doing so.

No published rate data, so no honest position on the horizontal axis: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Below the J.D. Power study’s size threshold, so no position on the vertical axis: Kemper, Shelter, Chubb, COUNTRY Financial, MAPFRE, Plymouth Rock, The Hanover. That study samples only the largest insurers, so these carriers will not appear in a future wave either. Premiums from NerdWallet’s August 2026 analysis; claims scores from the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. USAA is scored but not ranked in that study because it serves the military community only.

Not plotted, because no public rate data exists for them: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Complaint bands from NerdWallet’s analysis of NAIC complaint data, 2022–2024 (2021–2023 for Liberty Mutual and Mercury). We show the band rather than a numeric complaint index on purpose — the per-carrier indexes published by different compilers contradict each other badly enough to be unusable, because the index is reported per underwriting subsidiary and most sources do not say which one they used.
