How Geico scores

Each category is scored against a published figure, then weighted into the overall score. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than estimate one.

Strengths and trade-offs

What Geico does well

  • Cheapest of the four biggest insurers on our benchmark profile
  • AM Best A++, the highest financial strength rating issued
  • Seventeen discounts, most with a published maximum rather than 'varies'
  • Best-established mobile app in the industry by rating volume
  • Fewer complaints than expected for a company of its size

Where it falls short

  • Claims satisfaction is slightly below the segment average
  • DriveEasy is unavailable in California, Hawaii and Vermont, and every driver on the policy must enroll
  • Claim Forgiveness is not available in California, Connecticut or Massachusetts
  • No published rideshare coverage or diminishing deductible

The full review

Geico built the direct-to-consumer model in American car insurance and still runs it better than most. Reported under Berkshire Hathaway, it held 11.63% of the private passenger auto market on 2024 premiums — third behind State Farm and Progressive. There are no captive agents; the entire experience is designed to be completed on a phone.

What it costs

$2,023 a year for full coverage on our benchmark profile, roughly 14% below the $2,356 national average and the lowest of the four largest insurers. Only USAA, Travelers and Erie come in cheaper across our whole set, and two of those three are restricted — USAA to the military community, Erie to twelve states.

The discount list

Geico publishes seventeen discounts and, unusually, attaches a maximum to most of them rather than saying 'varies'. A clean driving record is worth up to 22%, multi-vehicle up to 25%, good student up to 15%, and deployed military up to 25%. DriveEasy, the telematics program, is stated at 5–15% — a narrower and more honest range than several competitors advertise.

DriveEasy has an all-or-nothing rule

Every driver on the policy has to participate, not just the one who wants the discount. On a household policy with a teenager, that is a materially different proposition than it looks.

DriveEasy is offered in 47 states plus D.C., but not in California, Hawaii or Vermont.

How claims go

697 out of 1,000 in the J.D. Power 2025 study, three points under the 700-point segment average. That is close enough to average to be a non-event in either direction. The more encouraging signal is the complaint record: Geico draws fewer complaints than its size predicts, which is not easy at this scale. Geico's version of accident forgiveness is called Claim Forgiveness, can be earned after five accident-free years or purchased, and is unavailable in California, Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Who it suits

Geico suits the driver who wants a low rate without an agent conversation, who will do the work in an app, and who values a company that will unambiguously be able to pay. It suits people who want a coverage feature set with real depth less well — there is no published rideshare coverage and no diminishing deductible — and it is not the choice for someone who weights claims experience above all else.

Our verdict

Geico does the fundamentals better than almost anyone: it is the cheapest of the big four, carries the top financial strength rating, publishes a long and specific discount list, and runs the most-used app in the category. Its claims score is unremarkable, which is the honest caveat. For a driver optimizing on price and self-service rather than on claims handling, it is very hard to argue against.

No published rate data, so no honest position on the horizontal axis: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Below the J.D. Power study’s size threshold, so no position on the vertical axis: Kemper, Shelter, Chubb, COUNTRY Financial, MAPFRE, Plymouth Rock, The Hanover. That study samples only the largest insurers, so these carriers will not appear in a future wave either. Premiums from NerdWallet’s August 2026 analysis; claims scores from the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. USAA is scored but not ranked in that study because it serves the military community only.

Not plotted, because no public rate data exists for them: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Complaint bands from NerdWallet’s analysis of NAIC complaint data, 2022–2024 (2021–2023 for Liberty Mutual and Mercury). We show the band rather than a numeric complaint index on purpose — the per-carrier indexes published by different compilers contradict each other badly enough to be unusable, because the index is reported per underwriting subsidiary and most sources do not say which one they used.
