How Erie scores

Each category is scored against a published figure, then weighted into the overall score. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than estimate one.

Strengths and trade-offs

What Erie does well

  • Highest-ranked insurer in the J.D. Power 2025 claims satisfaction study
  • Third-cheapest full-coverage average in this review
  • Rate Lock freezes your premium year to year, even after a claim
  • Pet coverage, locksmith and personal-belongings cover included with comprehensive and collision
  • First Accident Forgiveness after three years as a customer

Where it falls short

  • Available in only twelve states and D.C. — most drivers cannot buy it
  • AM Best downgraded Erie from A+ to A in September 2025
  • Google Play rating of 2.9 is the lowest in this review
  • YourTurn pays cash rewards rather than a premium discount, and is unavailable in Kentucky, D.C., New York and North Carolina

The full review

Erie Insurance sells in twelve states and D.C., mostly in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, entirely through local agents. On 2024 premiums it holds 1.39% of the national market — a rounding error next to State Farm — and it beat every insurer in the country on claims satisfaction in J.D. Power's most recent study.

The claims result

743 out of 1,000, against a segment average of 700. That is first place among ranked insurers, ahead of NJM at 731 and Liberty Mutual at 730, and ahead of every national carrier by at least 27 points. USAA scored 741 but is excluded from the ranking on eligibility grounds. Erie's complaint record is close to what its size predicts — good, though not the standout its claims score is.

What it costs

$1,842 a year for full coverage, 22% below the national average. Erie is cheaper than Geico, State Farm and Progressive, and dramatically cheaper than Allstate. Combining the lowest-but-three price in this review with the highest claims score is not a combination anyone else here offers.

The September 2025 downgrade

AM Best cut Erie's Financial Strength Rating from A+ (Superior) to A (Excellent) in September 2025, citing multi-year surplus declines from elevated weather losses and rising severity in auto and homeowners claims. The outlook was revised to stable.

A is still a strong rating, and Erie remains a well-capitalized insurer — but this is a real change, and any source still showing Erie at A+ is out of date.

Features nobody else has

Rate Lock is the genuine outlier: it freezes your auto premium year after year, even if you file a claim. Erie is careful to note it does not guarantee continued coverage, is capped at three years in Virginia, and is not available everywhere. Erie also includes with comprehensive and collision what most insurers sell separately — up to $500 per pet in pet coverage, $75 locksmith reimbursement, $350 toward personal belongings, and $75 per passenger in travel expenses.

The app is the weak point

4.38 on the App Store and 2.9 on Google Play. That Play Store figure is the lowest in this review by some distance, and it matters because Erie's whole model is agent-mediated: if you want to self-serve, the tooling is not there. YourTurn, the telematics program, is structured as cash rewards — $2.50 to $15 every two weeks per 50 tracked miles — rather than a premium discount, and is unavailable in Kentucky, D.C., New York and North Carolina.

Our verdict

If Erie sells in your state, quote it. It scored higher on claims satisfaction than any other ranked insurer in the country, costs 22% less than the national average, and includes coverage extras most carriers charge for. The AM Best downgrade is worth noting rather than fearing — A is still Excellent — and the app is genuinely poor. Neither outweighs the rest.

No published rate data, so no honest position on the horizontal axis: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Below the J.D. Power study’s size threshold, so no position on the vertical axis: Kemper, Shelter, Chubb, COUNTRY Financial, MAPFRE, Plymouth Rock, The Hanover. That study samples only the largest insurers, so these carriers will not appear in a future wave either. Premiums from NerdWallet’s August 2026 analysis; claims scores from the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. USAA is scored but not ranked in that study because it serves the military community only.

Not plotted, because no public rate data exists for them: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Complaint bands from NerdWallet’s analysis of NAIC complaint data, 2022–2024 (2021–2023 for Liberty Mutual and Mercury). We show the band rather than a numeric complaint index on purpose — the per-carrier indexes published by different compilers contradict each other badly enough to be unusable, because the index is reported per underwriting subsidiary and most sources do not say which one they used.
