How Plymouth Rock scores
Each category is scored against a published figure, then weighted into the overall score. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than estimate one.
Sources: average premiums from NerdWallet's August 2026 rate analysis (Quadrant Information Services), for a 35-year-old driver with a clean record and good credit in a 2023 Toyota Camry LE at 12,000 miles a year, 100/300/50 limits with $1,000 deductibles — national average $2,356. Claims satisfaction from the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study (segment average 700). Complaint record from NerdWallet's analysis of NAIC complaint data, 2022–2024. Financial strength from AM Best. Discounts and app data from each carrier's published pages and the Apple App Store / Google Play, retrieved August 2026. Updated August 2026.

The full review
Plymouth Rock Assurance writes personal auto in six Northeast states, with its strongest position in Massachusetts. It is privately held, independent, and also operates the Palisades and High Point brands in New Jersey.
It has never appeared in NAIC's published national top 25, which for a six-state carrier says more about the arithmetic than the company. In Massachusetts it wrote $633 million in 2024 and holds 8.58% of the market, fifth in the state — behind MAPFRE but ahead of most national names operating there.
Where it genuinely leads
Two places. Its complaint record sits in the "far fewer than expected" band, the best we assign. And its apps are rated 4.86 on the App Store and 4.7 on Google Play — higher than Progressive, higher than Geico, higher than anyone else here. For a carrier this size to out-rate companies with a hundred times its marketing budget on both platforms is a real signal.
YUBI is the telematics program — an app that scores how you drive.
Road Rewards is separate: a points scheme rather than a driving-behaviour discount. They are easy to conflate and they do different things, so check which one an offer refers to.
The rating is the caveat
AM Best rates Plymouth Rock A- (Excellent) — the lowest financial strength rating among the scored carriers in this review. The direction is encouraging: in March 2026 AM Best revised the outlook to positive from stable, which no other carrier here currently has. A- is a strong rating; it is simply not A or A++.
Plymouth Rock is the strongest small carrier in this review on everything except price. The complaint record is excellent, the apps are the best here by a distance, and it is the only carrier whose financial outlook is currently improving rather than stable or negative. In its six states it is worth quoting even though the headline premium is ordinary.

Where Plymouth Rock sits in the market
Not plotted, because no public rate data exists for them: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Complaint bands from NerdWallet’s analysis of NAIC complaint data, 2022–2024 (2021–2023 for Liberty Mutual and Mercury). We show the band rather than a numeric complaint index on purpose — the per-carrier indexes published by different compilers contradict each other badly enough to be unusable, because the index is reported per underwriting subsidiary and most sources do not say which one they used.
Plymouth Rock by state
