How Liberty Mutual scores

Each category is scored against a published figure, then weighted into the overall score. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than estimate one.

  • The online customization discount is unavailable in nine states including California and New York

The full review

Liberty Mutual is the seventh-largest private passenger auto insurer in the U.S. on 2024 premiums, writing in 45 states and D.C. — not Alaska, California, North Dakota, South Dakota or Wyoming. It is also the only carrier in this review whose price we cannot report, because it does not release rate data to the studies that compile such things.

The missing price

NerdWallet states it plainly: 'Although it's one of the largest insurers in the country, Liberty Mutual is not included in our rates analysis due to a lack of publicly available information.' Insure.com says the same thing independently. There are figures circulating for Liberty Mutual on aggregator sites, but they trace back to low-authority sources and appear reverse-engineered from national averages rather than sourced from rate filings. We have not published one, and we would treat any site that does with suspicion.

What this means practically

You cannot rank Liberty Mutual on price against Geico or State Farm before contacting it. The comparison simply is not available.

That does not make it expensive — it makes it unknown. The only way to find out is to run a quote, which is worth doing precisely because you cannot shortcut it.

How claims go

730 out of 1,000 in J.D. Power's 2025 claims study — third overall, behind only Erie and NJM, and 30 points above the segment average. That is better than State Farm, better than Geico, and 57 points better than Progressive. It is the strongest argument for the company.

The complaint record works against it

Liberty Mutual draws more complaints than its size predicts, on 2022 analysis of 2021–2023 NAIC data — a slightly older window than the 2022–2024 data used for most carriers here, so treat the comparison as directional. Combined with an AM Best rating of A rather than A+ or A++, the picture is of a company that handles claims well when it handles them, but generates more friction along the way than its claims score alone suggests.

Coverage and RightTrack

Better Car Replacement is the distinctive feature — a total loss is replaced with a car one model year newer and 15,000 fewer miles, rather than a depreciated cash payout. RightTrack is app-based and offered in two forms: a 90-day monitoring period that fixes your score for the life of the policy, or continuous monitoring updated at each renewal. Liberty Mutual publishes up to 30% for safe driving and 10–15% just for enrolling.

Our verdict

Liberty Mutual's claims score is genuinely strong — third in this review, and better than every carrier larger than it. Its complaint record is not, and the absence of any public rate data means you cannot know whether it is competitive for you without asking. That opacity is itself worth factoring in: every other major carrier here can be price-checked before you engage.

Why there is no overall score

We only publish a composite score when enough of it rests on published figures — at least 70% of the scoring weight, including price. Liberty Mutual falls below that: one of our six categories has no published figure (price). Averaging whatever is left would produce a confident-looking number built mostly on the categories that need no third-party study, and a carrier scored that way can easily outrank one we actually measured. The individual categories above are real; the missing ones are simply missing.
