How Lemonade scores
Each category is scored against a published figure, then weighted into the overall score. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than estimate one.
Sources: average premiums from NerdWallet's August 2026 rate analysis (Quadrant Information Services), for a 35-year-old driver with a clean record and good credit in a 2023 Toyota Camry LE at 12,000 miles a year, 100/300/50 limits with $1,000 deductibles — national average $2,356. Claims satisfaction from the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study (segment average 700). Complaint record from NerdWallet's analysis of NAIC complaint data, 2022–2024. Financial strength from AM Best. Discounts and app data from each carrier's published pages and the Apple App Store / Google Play, retrieved August 2026. Updated August 2026.
Strengths and trade-offs
What Lemonade does well
- Carries a current Demotech A' financial strength rating, unlike several peers
- Pricing rewards low mileage and careful driving via its Safety Score
- Bundles naturally with Lemonade renters or homeowners coverage
Where it falls short
- Only ten states
- Far more complaints than expected for its size
- No AM Best rating we could verify — its rating is from Demotech, a different scale
- Not in standard rate studies, so no comparable average premium exists
The full review
Lemonade writes auto in ten states as an extension of its renters and homeowners business. Its auto pricing leans on a Safety Score derived from phone sensors — mileage, braking, cornering, phone handling, time of day — rather than primarily on demographics.
The financial strength question
Lemonade holds a Demotech A' (A-prime) financial strength rating, affirmed in June 2026. That is a genuine independent assessment, and it puts Lemonade ahead of Root and Clearcover, neither of which currently holds one from any agency. It is worth being precise about what it is not: Demotech's scale is not AM Best's, and an A' does not map onto the A++ through A- ratings shown for other carriers on this site.
Lemonade draws far more complaints than its size predicts — the weakest band we assign.
So do Root and Clearcover, and Elephant is only one band better. Four for four suggests something about how app-first insurers handle disputes, rather than four independent coincidences.
Who it suits
Lemonade makes most sense for someone who already holds a Lemonade renters or homeowners policy, drives few miles, and wants everything in one app. It makes least sense for anyone who wants to compare prices before committing, since no comparable average premium is published, or who weights complaint records heavily.
Lemonade is the better-documented of the app-first insurers here: it holds a current Demotech financial strength rating, which Root and Clearcover do not. The complaint band is still the weakest we assign, and ten states is a narrow footprint. Reasonable to consider if you already hold a Lemonade policy and drive little; not yet a default.
We only publish a composite score when enough of it rests on published figures — at least 70% of the scoring weight, including price. Lemonade falls below that: 5 of our six categories have no published figure (price, claims satisfaction, financial strength, discounts, digital experience). Averaging whatever is left would produce a confident-looking number built mostly on the categories that need no third-party study, and a carrier scored that way can easily outrank one we actually measured. The individual categories above are real; the missing ones are simply missing.
