How State Farm scores

Each category is scored against a published figure, then weighted into the overall score. Where a figure is not published, we say so rather than estimate one.

Strengths and trade-offs

What State Farm does well

  • The largest agent network in the U.S., which matters most on the day you file a claim
  • Best claims-satisfaction score of the four biggest insurers
  • AM Best A++ — the highest financial strength rating issued
  • Good-student discount of up to 25%, one of the largest published
  • Strong, consistently rated apps on both iOS and Android

Where it falls short

  • Not the cheapest national carrier — Travelers, Geico and Progressive all average less
  • Drive Safe & Save is unavailable in California, Massachusetts and Rhode Island
  • Does not publish accident forgiveness, new car replacement, or a diminishing deductible
  • Gap coverage is not part of the published lineup

The full review

State Farm writes roughly one in five private passenger auto policies in the United States — $67.75 billion in premiums in 2024, more than Progressive and nearly twice Allstate. That scale is the point of the company rather than a side effect of it: State Farm sells almost entirely through captive agents who work under their own name in their own office, and the network is the product as much as the policy is.

What it costs

On our benchmark profile — a 35-year-old with a clean record and good credit — State Farm averages $2,065 a year for full coverage, about 12% below the $2,356 national average. That is a solid result, but it places State Farm behind Travelers, Erie, Geico and USAA on price, and effectively level with Progressive. Nobody buys State Farm because it was the cheapest quote in the set.

How claims go

This is where the company earns its position. State Farm scored 716 out of 1,000 in J.D. Power's 2025 claims satisfaction study, against a 700-point segment average — the best of the four largest insurers, and 43 points clear of Progressive. Its complaint record is about what its size predicts, which for a company this large is a genuinely good outcome; volume tends to drag complaint indexes upward.

Discounts and the telematics program

State Farm publishes eleven discounts. The two worth actually chasing are the good-student discount, at up to 25%, and the passive-restraint discount, which cuts up to 40% off medical-related coverages. Drive Safe & Save is unusual in pairing the phone app with a Bluetooth beacon posted to you; State Farm publishes savings of up to 30%, though the program is not offered in California, Massachusetts or Rhode Island.

Worth knowing before you switch

State Farm does not publish accident forgiveness, new car replacement, or a diminishing-deductible feature — all three are standard at several competitors, and their absence is not obvious until you go looking.

Gap coverage is also not part of the published lineup, which matters if you are financing a new car and owe more than it is worth.

Who it suits

State Farm suits drivers who want a relationship rather than a transaction — people who would rather walk into an office than work through a claims queue, and who are willing to pay somewhat more than the cheapest direct writer for that. It suits families with teenage drivers particularly well, given the size of the good-student discount. It suits price-first shoppers considerably less.

Our verdict

State Farm is the default answer for a reason. It is not the cheapest, and its discount list is shorter than Geico's or Progressive's, but it combines the best claims score among the big four with an A++ balance sheet and an agent network no competitor matches. If you want a person rather than an app, this is the strongest version of that.

No published rate data, so no honest position on the horizontal axis: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Below the J.D. Power study’s size threshold, so no position on the vertical axis: Kemper, Shelter, Chubb, COUNTRY Financial, MAPFRE, Plymouth Rock, The Hanover. That study samples only the largest insurers, so these carriers will not appear in a future wave either. Premiums from NerdWallet’s August 2026 analysis; claims scores from the J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study. USAA is scored but not ranked in that study because it serves the military community only.

Not plotted, because no public rate data exists for them: Liberty Mutual, NJM, Clearcover, Elephant, Lemonade, Root, Texas Farm Bureau. Complaint bands from NerdWallet’s analysis of NAIC complaint data, 2022–2024 (2021–2023 for Liberty Mutual and Mercury). We show the band rather than a numeric complaint index on purpose — the per-carrier indexes published by different compilers contradict each other badly enough to be unusable, because the index is reported per underwriting subsidiary and most sources do not say which one they used.
